Diet & Migraine - Where To Begin?A migraine headache is something to avoid if at all possible for most people. It is not worth the day off from work or having to spend the day in a dark and quiet room unless absolutely necessary. While the causes of migraine headache are many, the food you eat can actually be a trigger. It doesn't actually cause the migraine but can set the process into motion and make the environment right for a migraine to come on.
Diet & Migraine has been studied and there are some common foods that you might want to avoid or eliminate completely from your diet. Even though what triggers a migraine for one person may not do so for another, there are common trigger foods to take into consideration with your diet & migraine. You could try eliminating one set of trigger foods to see if it helps. If there is no difference, then you can bring that food back into your diet and eliminate the next set of foods. Coffee, chocolate, and MSG are all very commonly known for setting the right circumstances into motion for a migraine headache. The natural caffeine contained in coffee and chocolate can be the main trigger. Avoiding most caffeine though is a good idea to see if that helps eliminate your headaches. The daily recommended amount of caffeine is two servings. For some, it is a good idea to avoid cheese and other dairy products also. Dairy diet & migraine go hand in hand for some. Yogurt, milk, ice cream and pudding are all things to try eliminating for this trigger group. Breads and pastas may be a trigger for yet another group of people. Starch diet & migraine can be a pain for many people. This means avoiding homemade yeast breads and sourdough breads especially but watch out for biscuits pancakes, and pastas too. Maybe you should consider both fruits and vegetables also. For some, avoiding products like snow peas and broad beans helps to cut down on migraine. Anything pickled or fermented like sauerkraut or pickles is good to cut from your diet too. Some citrus fruits and others like avocados and bananas can be trigger foods too. Anything high in sodium is another possible food category to avoid. Things like teriyaki, Worcestershire and salty foods are a part of this group. Last, but not least, is alcohol. Alcohol like red wine can be a big contributor to diet & migraine triggers. Any alcohol though is a possible instigator of migraine headache and would be smart to test by eliminating from your diet.
